박이원의 전시는 한편의 동화와도 같다. 그 동화엔 비늘을 뒤집어 쓴 소녀가 있고, 날개와 물고기가 있고, 비늘을 씻어 내릴 샤워기가 있다. 그것은 마치 꿈속의 초현실적 공간에서 부유하고 있는듯한 느낌을 준다.
또한 여러 상징코드를 가지고 있는 그녀의 작품은 서정적인 시를 읽는 것처럼 잔잔하다. 인어이야기가 하는 한편의 모노드라마와 같다는 전시 소개의 글은 그녀의 작품이 관람을 넘어 행위하고 참여하는 공유공간과도 같다는 찬사를 했다 정말 그럴까? 그녀의 작품들이 일정한 스토리를 가지가 있다는 것은 확실하다. 캔버스에 표현된 비늘들과 캔버스 천을 오려 붙인 입체날개, 그리고 직접 캔버스 천을 가위로 오려서 캔버스 천으로 만든 원피스 옷에다 붙인 퍼포먼스까지, 그녀의 작품들은 일련의 결말을 향에 내달린다.
물론 그녀의 작품이 세련되거나 높은 완성도를 보여주진 않지만 일러스트적이 감성으로 관객들에게 잔잔한 이야기를 전달하고 있음은 사실이다.
오즈의 마법사의 주인공도로시의 빨간 구두를 모티브로 한 작품의 내러티브는 자신과 자신의 집을 찾아가는 여행의 과정을 보여준다. 그것은 성장 드라마와도 같다. 그녀의 작품엔 비늘을 벗어버리고 싶은 욕망과 그것을 더욱 지키려는 갈등 사이에서 생겨나는 자신의 내면적 감정들이 섬세하게 표현되어 있다. 물고기에게 날개를 달아 현실을 벗어나게 한다거나 자신의 빨간 심장 아이콘을 목걸이로 만들어 목에 걸고, 샤워기의 물에 자신의 비늘을 모두 씻어 버리고자 하는 솔직함은 그녀의 작품을 바라보는 관객들의 마음을 따뜻하게 만든다. 그것은 마치 영화 ‘아멜리에’의 주인공이 물이 되어 녹아 내릴 때의 감동과도 흡사하다.
사실 작가의 고백은 예술가로써의 자아에 초점이 맞춰져 있는듯하다. 자신을 벗어나는 것, 의미를 좀더 확대하여 회화를 벗어나고자 하는 욕망은 도로시가 자신의 집으로 돌아가고자 하는 열망과도 같다. 또한 그것은 상상력 가득한 소녀적 감성에 자신을 놓아두고 싶은 희망이기도 하다. 캔버스를 찢는다는 것이 회화를 벗어난다는 의미보다는 반대로 회화에 더욱 집착함을 드러내듯이 그녀의 작품은 성장기의 그 소소한 유쾌함에 머무르고 싶음을 이야기한다. 그러나 그것은 애써 웃음짓는 유쾌함이다. 자신만의 자아 찾기에 빠져있는 그녀의 작품은 아기자기하지만 사회와는 격리되어있는 내면적 감수성에 대한 이야기이다. 여리고 세심한 소녀적 감성을 강조하는 그녀의 작품이 꿈을 상징하는 날개와, 비늘, 눈물방울들로 가득 차있는 것은 아마도 당연할지도 모른다. 동화 속 도로시의 빨간 루비 구두 굽을 세 번 마주치면 집으로 갈 수 있다는 희망은 언제나 유효하지만 애써 외면하고 싶어 하는지도 모른다. * 백 곤 미학

The exhibition of Yiwon APRK is like a series of fairy tales. There is a girl who is wearing scales: there is a wing and a fish, and a shower, which can wash the scales off. It gives the feeling of floating in a surreal space in our dreams. As well, there are various symbolic codes in her work. It is very [peaceful and clam just like we are reading a poem. The prologue, which is just like one　 monologue about the mermaid, praises her work by saying that it’s not onl　y making people want to be a spectator but also making them want to participate in it. Could this be true? It’s quite obvious that there is regular pattern to the stories in her works. Her works consistently head towards a conclusion on canvas. For example, scale, three- dimensional wings and a dress made from the cloth of the canvas, seemingly disparate elements, all lead to a cohesive conclusion. Even though her works are not considered as high art to sophisticated, it is a fact that she gives us messages with her illustrative sense. The narrative of this work that is inspired by the Dorothy (who is the heroine in ‘Wizard of OZ’) shows us the process of the journey to find her home and herself. This is just like a growth journey drama. It delicately expresses the conflict between the desire to take off her scales, and at the same time, wanting to keep them strongly on her. Straightforwardness such as attaching the wing to the fish thereby helping to escape reality, wearing a necklace which is the icon of her heart, and washing all the scales off with the shower, make spectators fell so warm. This is quite similar to the impression we’ve got from the movie “ Amelie” as she melted in the water. In fact, it seems that the focus of the artist is on herself as an artist. Escape from herself, if I use the term in a board sense, the desire to escape from the picture is the same as the wish that Dorothy had to go back home. Moreover, that’s a hope that she gave herself as a girl in her teens, when he was full of imagination. Her works tell us about wishing to stay cheerful like she was when she was young, as if tearing the canvas doesn’t mean escaping from the picture, on the contrary, it means sticking more to the picture. Actually, that’s just a feigned smile. Her works tell us about the inner sense of looking for an ego that is harmonious, but isolated from society it may be obvious that her work is full of wings ( a symbol of dreams), scales, and tears to emphases her delicate and meticulous sensibility. In the Wizard of OZ, Dorothy clicks her ruby-red heels three times, in the hope that she can go home. This hope of escape is available to us at any time, but we may want to ignore it.
