청춘이란 인생의 어떤 기간이 아니라 마음가짐을 말한다.
장미의 용모, 붉은 입술, 나긋나긋한 손발이 아니라
씩씩한 의지, 풍부한 상상력, 불타 오르는 정열을 가리킨다.
청춘이란 인생의 깊은 샘의 청신함을 말한다.
청춘이란 두려움을 물리치는 용기, 안이한 마음을 뿌리치는 모험심을 의미한다.
때로는 20 세 청년보다도 70 세 노인에게 청춘이 있다.
나이를 더해 가는 것만으로 사람은 늙지 않는다.
이상을 읽어버릴 때 비로소 늙는다.
세월은 피부에 주름살을 늘려 가지만 열정을 잃으면 마음이 시든다.
고뇌, 공포, 실망에 의해서 기력은 땅을 기고 정신은 먼지가 된다.
70 세든 16 세든 인간의 가슴에는 경이에 이끌리는 마음,
어린애와 같은 미지에 대한 탐구심, 인생에 대한 흥미와 환희가 있다.
그대에게도 나에게도
마음의 눈에 보이지 않는 우체국이 있다.
인간과 하나님으로부터 아름다움, 희망, 기쁨, 용기, 힘의 영감을 받는 한
그대는 젊다.
영감이 끊기고, 정신이 아이러니의 눈에 덮이고 비탄의 얼음에 갇혀질 때
20 세라도 인간은 늙는다.
머리를 높이 치켜들고 희망의 물결을 붙잡는 한
80 세라도 인간은 청춘으로 남는다.

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind;
it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;
it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions;
it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite,
for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than
a body of twenty. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years.
We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.
Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder,
the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living.
In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as
it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and
from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism
and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as
your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young
at eighty.
