Study Tips
1. Where can I study?
Choosing a quiet place to study is very important. In the world of today we have many distractions: Radio, Computer, Video Games, Telephone, Television, and so on.
If you are looking for a quiet place to study, you can go to the library, or turn off any distraction in your room. I’m sure that everyone in your home can understand that you need a quiet place to study, especially for an upcoming exam or test. When the weather is warm, many people study or read in parks. This is a very relaxing way to enjoy your time as a student in Toronto.
2. Understanding:
The best way to learn a new language is to “immerge” into it. That means you should go to school, watch television, speak, write and read in the language. Sometimes television shows can be difficult to understand, because some actors have different accents, but you should try to follow their action along with their words to get the general idea of the show. Reading the newspaper or a book can also be challenging… even for native speakers! When you are reading an article with difficult words, try to understand the main idea of the article. You should take notes of the words that you don’t understand, look them up in the dictionary or ask your teacher, he or she will be more than happy to help you.
3. Speaking:
If you want to learn a second language, the only way to really do well is to speak the language as often as you can. You can only learn so much from reading books. The best way to practice your speaking is to go out into the community. Join a club, talk to your fellow students, talk to your teachers, talk to shop staff, waiters, etc… If you don’t speak the language, you will not learn it well.
