In Rome today, Finmeccanica ? via its Company Alenia Aermacchi (a subsidiary of Alenia Aeronautica) ? and ARMAEREO (Direzione Generale per gli Armamenti Aeronautici) signed a contract worth EUR 220 million to provide the Italian Air Force with six M-346 Master advanced trainer aircraft (T-346A) and related flight simulators, which together comprise an Integrated Training System (ITS). This contract forms part of a broader agreement to supply a total of 15 M-346 Masters and related support.

Also included in the contract are logistics support, the training of military personnel and the construction of part of the logistic-infrastructural platform to be used for training and ground operations. This will consist of multimedia training rooms and a new flight line for the M-346 Master to be built at the Lecce Flying School along with a hangar and maintenance services for the aircraft.

The first two M-346 Masters, which are scheduled for delivery by the end of 2010, will be initially assigned to the Flight Testing Department at the Pratica di Mare air base, where the first operational tests will take place. The Italian Air Force will receive four more aircraft by the end of 2011, and will be the world’s first Air Force to have a training line based on the M-346 Master, the most advanced aircraft currently available on the market for training military pilots to fly fourth and fifth generation combat aircraft.

This contract testifies to the fruitful partnership between the Finmeccanica Group, Italy's Ministry of Defence and Ministry of Economic Development, together with Ministry for the Economy and Finance, and the country’s Air Force, and represents a first important step in promoting the M-346 Master on the international market. A number of countries around the world are at present evaluating the aircraft for their flight schools, including the United Arab Emirates, which recently selected 48 M-346 Master aircraft. The contract for these aircraft is currently being finalised. 

디펜스 뉴스에 올라온 기사로 한마디로 이탈리아 국방부가 드디어 (기다리고 기다리던) 지난 11월 10일 Alenia Aermacchi M-346 Master 제트 훈련기의 첫 도입분 계약에 서명했다는 내용입니다. 2억2천만 유로 (미화 3억2천9백만 달러)에 달하는 계약으로 이탈리아가 M-346의 첫 구매국이 된 것입니다.
이탈리아 공군에 총 6대의 기체가 도입될 예정인데 비행 시뮬레이터도 제공될 것이라고 Finmeccanica 사에서 밝혔다고 합니다. Alenia Aermacchi사는 Finmeccanica사의 계열사인 Alenia Aeronautica사의 자회사입니다. 이탈리아 공군은 최종적으로 15대의 M-346 훈련기를 들여올 예정이라고 합니다.
또한 계약에는 군수지원, 훈련, 훈련과 지상 작전에 쓰일 군수-기간 플랫폼의 건설 및 Lecce 비행 학교에 들어가게 될 멀티미디어 훈련실, 비행 대기선 (항공기의 정비 및 주기 구역), 격납고 그리고 훈련기 정비 시설의 건설도 포함되어 있다고 합니다.
2대의 M-346이 2010년까지 제일 처음 도입될 예정인데 Pratica di Mare 기지에 위치한 이탈리아 공군의 비행시험장에 배치될 것이라고 합니다. 나머지 4대는 2011년까지 인도될 것이라고 하네요. 원래 이 계약은 지난 6월 알레냐 아에르마키사에서 계약 성사를 발표했었는데 실제 서명은 지난 10일에 이루어진 것입니다
그 이유는 이탈리아 정부가 M-346을 도입하기로 천명한 2007년 5월부터 계약이 진행되었지만 이탈리아의 산업부 (Industry Ministry)에서 배정한 M-346 훈련기의 도입 예산 확보가 예상보다 많이 지연되었기 때문이라고 합니다.
두바이 에어쇼가 시작하기 하루 전에 이루어진 이 계약으로 지난 2월 48대의 M-346 훈련기를 도입하기로 결정했던 아랍에미리트연합 (UAE)이 에어쇼 기간 중에 정식으로 도입계약을 체결할 가능성이 높아졌다고 합니다. UAE는 M-346의 첫 구매국이 되기를 원치 않는다는 의사를 밝혔기 때문이라고 합니다.
이런 UAE의 방침은 제가 지난번에 올렸던 사우디의 무기 도입 소식에서 밝힌 것처럼 개발 중이거나 아직 팔리지 않은 기종을 기피하고 검증된 기종이라도 최소한의 스펙 변경만으로 도입하는 중동 국가들의 경향을 반영하고 있다고 할 수 있습니다


한편 이번 두바이 에어쇼 참가기종중 눈길을 끈 항공기는 중국산 L-15 고등훈련기입니다.
이 훈련기의 원형은 러시아산 Yak-130 고등훈련기인데, 원래 이탈리아와 러시아가 합동으로 개발을 하다 규격이 상이한 양국의 주장이 부딪쳐 공동개발이 무산된 후 각자 독자적으로 개발을 하며, 러시아는 Yak-130을 완료하였고 짝퉁의 대명사인 중국은 Hongdu Aviation Industry Corporation (HAIG)사에서 중국공군과 해군의 Lead-In Fighter Trainer (LIFT) 개발요구에 따라 Yak-130을 바탕으로 Hongdu L-15 Falcon (猎鹰) 이라는 고등훈련기를 개발합니다. 이로써 3개 기종의 인척관계가 정리됩니다. (L-15의 경쟁기종은 Guizhou Aircraft Industry Corporation (GAIC)사의 JL-9/FTC-2000 Mountain Eagle입니다)
처음 제작한 두대는 (#01 & #02) ZMKB-Progress (Lotarev) DV-2 엔진 2기를 장착하는데 A/B가 없어 초음속 비행이 불가능했습니다. 3번기체 (#03) 는 개량형인 DV-2나  DV-2F에 A/B를 장착한 모델로 이미 초음속 비행에 성공한 바 있습니다. 현재 계획은 더 강화된 Ukraine's Ivchenko-Progress AI-222K-25F 터보팬엔진과 A/B를 장착할 예정으로 우크라이나로부터 면허를 얻어야 합니다.
