This province located in the south and west of the Korean Peninsula is bounded by the Sobaek mountains on the east over which is the province of Gyeongnam. To the south of the province are 'Dadohae'(an archipelago) and Jeju Island, and to the west it faces against China. On the north is the Noryeong mountains as a boundary with JeollaBukdo. According to the topographical feature, it is 'east-high, west-low', and 'north-high, south-low', and the west area is higher than the north area, and the river-streams flows the vast-open fields of the west and west-north area and makes them fertile for farm products. In this province the three main rivers are Yeongsan-river which flows in Mokpo-bay, the Seomejin-river which, coming from Jeollabuk-do as the starting point, flows down the east mountains region, Tamjin-river which flows through Jangheung-gun and Gangjin-gun. These rivers flow out to the west sea and the south sea, taking a important role for the all kind of industry as well as rice crop. This province's Naju-open filed near around Yeongsan-river as well as Honam-open filed in Jeollabuk-do is a prominent granary of our country. Joellanam-do's climate is mild and genial, and has rich forest and plant resources and the world famous rias coast, sandbanks and also excellent marine resources- Dadohae, an archipelago (1,975 beautiful little islands).
