Something mysteriously formed,
Born before heaven and earth.
In the silence and the void,
Standing alone and unchanging,
Ever present and in motion.
Perhaps it is the mother of ten thousand things.
I do not know its name
Call it Tao.
For lack of a better word, I call it great.

Being great, it flows.
It flows far away.
Having gone far, it returns.

Therefore, "Tao is great;
Heaven is great;
Earth is great;
The king is also great."
These are the four great powers of the universe,
And the king is one　　 of them.

Man follows the earth.
Earth follows heaven.
Heaven follows the Tao.
Tao follows what is natural.


有物混成 先天地生, 寂兮廖兮 獨立而不改, 周行而不殆 可以爲天下母.
유물혼성 선천지생, 적혜료혜 독립이불개, 주행이불태 가이위천하모.
吾不知其名 字之曰道 强爲之名曰大, 大曰逝, 逝曰遠 遠曰反.
오부지기명 자지왈도 강위지명왈대, 대왈서, 서왈원 원왈반.
故 道大, 天大 地大 王亦大, 域中 有四大 而王居其一焉.
고 도대, 천대 지대 왕역대, 역중 유사대 이왕거기일언.

혼돈한 상태에서 이루어지는 것이 있어서 그것이 천지보다 먼저 생겼다.
고요하여 소리도 없고 형태도 없으며 짝이 없이 홀로 있다.
어디에도 미치지 않는 것이 없으나 손상되기 쉽다.
그것은 천하의 어머니가 될 만하다.
나는 그것의 이름을 알지 못한다.
그래서 그것을 도라는 글자로 부른다.
억지로 이름을 붙여 대라고 한다.
크기 때문에 가지 않는 곳이 없다.
어디에나 가기 때문에 멀다.
멀리 갔다가 본래의 곳으로 돌아온다.
그러므로 도는 크고 하늘도 크고, 땅도 크고 임금도 크다.
우주에 네 가지 큰 것이 있는데 임금도 그 중 하나이다.
사람은 땅의 법칙에 따르고 땅은 하늘의 법칙에 따르며,
하늘은 도의 법칙을 따르고 도는 자연의 법칙을 따른다.

There is something
that contains everything.

So it can act as the mother
of all things.
Not knowing its real name,
we onl　　y call it the Way.

If it must be named,
let its name be Great.
Greatness means going on,
going on means going far,
going far means turning back.

So they say: "The Way is great
heaven is great,
earth is great,
and humankind is great;
four greatnesses in the world,
and humanity is one　　 of them."

People follow the earth,
earth follows heaven,
heaven follows the Way,
the Way follows what is.

There is a mystery,
Beneath abstraction,
Silent, depthless,
Alone, unchanging,
Ubiquitous and liquid,
The mother of nature.
It has no name, but I call it "the Way";
It has no limit, but I call it "limitless".

Being limitless, it flows away forever;
Flowing away forever, it returns to my self:

The Way is limitless,
So nature is limitless,
So the world is limitless,
And so I am limitless.

For I am abstracted from the world,
The world from nature,
Nature from the Way,
And the Way from what is beneath abstraction.
