When alive, the body is supple, yielding.
In death, the body becomes hard, unyielding.

Living plants are flexible,
In death, they become dry and brittle.

Therefore, stubborn people are disciples of death, but
Flexible people are disciples of life.

In the same way,
Inflexible soldiers cannot win (a victory).
And the hardest trees are readiest for an axe to chop them down
Tough guys sink to the bottom, while
Flexible people rise to the top.



人之生也 柔弱, 其死也 堅强. 草木之生也 柔脆, 其死也 枯槁.
인지생야 유약, 기사야 견강. 초목지생야 유취, 기사야 고고.
故 堅强者 死之徒, 柔弱者 生之徒. 是以 兵强則不勝, 木强則折,
고 견강자 사지도, 유약자 생지도. 시이 병강즉불승, 목강즉절,
强大 處下 柔弱 處上.

사람이 살아있으면 부드럽고 약하지만 죽으면 굳고 강하다.
풀과 나무도 살았을 때는 부드럽지만 죽으면 말라서 단단하다.
그러므로 굳고 강한 것은 죽음의 속성이고 약하고 연한 것은 사람의 속성이다.
따라서 군사가 강하면 승리하지 못하고 나무가 단단하면 꺾인다.
강하고 큰 것을 아래에 처하고 약하고 부드러운 것은 위에 처한다.
