A South Korean woman is charged with lashing out towards US Terrorism and ends up injuring 3 of her fellow countrymen:
SEOUL, March 16 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean woman was arrested Thursday on suspicion of setting fire to a wooden training facility at the U.S. military headquarters in Seoul, which injured three people, police said.
The fire, which broke out at 1:39 a.m. Thursday at Yongsan Garrison, quickly spread and burned down four other U.S. command buildings, before it was contained three hours later, police officials said.
About 230 South Korean firefighters and 63 fire trucks were dispatched to control the blaze at the request of the U.S. military, they said.
Three South Korean civilian employees at the U.S. command were injured, but not mortally, command officials said.
Police apprehended a 57-year-old South Korean woman who was wandering around the area after she admitted to initiating the arson attack in protest of "U.S. terrorism."
"I sneaked onto the U.S. base and started the fire with a cigarette lighter to punish (U.S.) terrorism," police officials quoted the woman, only identified by the initial "K" of her surname, as saying.
The police said the woman will be put through psychiatric tests to check for any mental disorders.
The woman claimed to have slipped through Gate 22 at the U.S. base, which police said was not being guarded by security personnel at the time.
The Yongsan Garrison, which serves as the headquarters of the 30,000 U.S. troops stationed in South Korea, has been a constant source of anti-American sentiment here due to its high-profile presence in the heart of Seoul. The base houses 7,000 U.S. military personnel and their family members.
The U.S. plans to relocate it to Pyeongtaek, some 70 kilometers south of Seoul, by 2008.
(Note: Emphasis and bold are the KimcheeGI's doing.) I hope all three employees recover from their injuries quickly and that the contractors responsible for the Gate Guards get severely reprimanded and/or loose that contract. They definitely have some issues if a 57 year old can breech security that easily. |
