Lee Chang-soo, once a KATUSA Soldier, has finished what he calls his "Great America Tour" by biking across the Continental US:
...I realized it is really hard to talk about USA rationally. People from different background have different opinions on USA. Many people seemed to be biased by the media. I didn't like USA but some people seemed to hate America just because it's a cool thing to do.
I started cycling, so that I can speak for myself. I can't be wrong as long as I tell from my real experience.
The Yonhap piece is a little sensationalized, especially when dealing with the traffic ticket incident. Here's what Lee wrote in English:
He came out with another officer. He asked me questions where I stayed, where I got my money from etc.
I said “I get money from a fried chicken company. I stay at hotels”
He asked me if I’m from North or South Korea. He didn’t know “Republic of Korea” means South Korea, which means, in his mind, I couldn have been a North Korean terrorist who attempted to enter Delaware by bicycle without paying for the toll.
He wrote me a ticket, 90 dollars for ignoring a road sign and 60 dollars for causing disturbance on the road.
Here's what Yonhap reported in English:
But the most challenging moment happened at a highway toll. A police officer arrested him as he tried to cross from Maryland to Delaware. The highway was off-limits to vehicles other than cars, and the cop demanded his passport. Unaware that "Republic of Korea" refers to South Korea, the policeman suspected the young man looking haggard from the laborious trip might be a North Korean terrorist, he said.
Anyway, this guy has "seen the elephant," and I'd really like to know what he thinks about America and Americans now. Hope You and Diana have a Happy New Year in Times Square, Lee Chang-soo.
