(서울=연합뉴스) 맹찬형기자 = 국회는 31일 밤 본회의를 열어 이라크 북부 아르빌에 주둔중인 자이툰부대의 파병 기한을 올해 말에서 2005년 말까지 1년간 연장하는 내용의 국군부대의 이라크 파견 연장 동의안을 통과시켰다.

파병기한을 불과 1시간 20분을 남겨둔채 파병 연장안이 국회를 통과함에 따라 자이툰부대의 `위헌적' 외국 주둔 사태는 방지할 수 있게 됐다.

국회는 이날 표결에서 재석 298명 가운데 278명이 투표에 참여한 가운데 찬성 161, 반대 63, 기권 54표로 동의안을 가결했다.

표결에서 민주노동당 소속 의원 10명과 열린우리당의 파병 반대파 의원 일부가 반대표를 던졌다.

표결에 앞서 이뤄진 찬반 토론에서 열린우리당 임종인(林鍾仁) 의원과 민주노동당 권영길(權永吉) 이영순(李永順) 의원, 민주당 손봉숙(孫鳳淑) 의원 등이 파병 연장의 부당성을 주장했고, 열린우리당 정의용(鄭義溶) 의원은 "국익이라는 넓은 시각에서 파병해야 한다"며 찬성 의견을 폈다.

(LEAD) National Assembly Passes Bill on Extension of Iraq TroopDeployment

SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- Rival parties late Friday passed the bill extending South Korea's troop deployment in Iraq by another year after a last-minute agreement to vote on 19 long-delayed bills was mediated by National Assembly Speaker Kim One-ki.

The ruling Uri Party and the main opposition Grand National Party had earlier decided to accept Kim's recommendation that the 19 bills be put to a vote at the National Assembly plenary session before the dawn of the New Year, with discussions on a controversial bill calling for an investigation into human rights abuses by previous governments being postponed till February.

The 19 bills include the 2005 government budget bill and another controversial bill -- the revision of newspaper industry law, which opposition lawmakers insist is aimed at regulating major vernacular dailies that criticize the government.

Lawmakers attending the plenary session were to vote on the bills before midnight.
