Bio revolution in cosmetics

Cosmetics produced using biotechnologies are all the rage these days, especially with the rising awareness about healthy living. The biotechnology revolution has swept the cosmetics as well as other chemical industries. As consumers show great interest in natural skin care products that feature a healing capacity and avoid utilizing artificial chemical substances, the popularity of bio cosmetics is only expected to rise in the future. |
| What are bio cosmetics? |
| Up until the early 1990s, cosmetics containing natural ingredients such as the extracts of cucumber, lemon and aloe were very popular among consumers. But with the advent of skin care products containing elements that moisturize, soften and protect the skin, cosmetics firms released expensive functional products that eliminate and prevent wrinkles.
Bio cosmetics, which debuted in the market in 2000, are a notch higher from existing cosmetics as they contain substances used in medicines. A growing number of cosmetics firms are preoccupied with developing “healing” products that contain protein, genes and many other natural ingredients.
| Skin renewal |
| A local bio venture firm has recently developed a product containing peptide, a medicinal substance that can be obtained from protein and is usually used in ointments for treating scars. The new product is effective in renewing skin cells and removing wrinkles, as peptide is excellent at restoring skin cells and enhancing the elasticity of the skin. | |
| Alleviation of atopy symptoms |
| Another local firm specializing in the development of immune system-boosting materials has recently developed a product that can alleviate atopy-caused rashes by using antibodies against the Staphylococcus Aureus, which aggravates atopy. The biggest advantage of the new product is that, unlike existing atopy ointments based on steroids and other chemical substances, it treats the skin in a natural way. | |
| Cell revitalization |
| Cosmetics based on bean extracts famous for revitalizing skin cells have also been released recently. Such bean-based products, which also contain pentavitin, a wheat extract, improve dull and dry skin and help it look healthy. | |
| |
| Removal of pollutants and prevention of dehydration |
| Cosmetics containing organic germinated brown rice are effective in removing pollutants thanks to the sponge-like fiber of the rice. Plus, oryzenin peptide, a protein decomposer contained in brown rice, prevents skin from dehydrating. | |
| |
| Healing effects |
| Cosmetics based on the epidermal growth factor (EGF) contained in breast milk are known for preventing aging. EGF is excellent at promoting cell growth and healing scars. The firm that developed EGF-based cosmetics says it plans to continue to developing bio cosmetics in the future. | |
| |
| Skin protection |
| Skin care products made of naturally fermented extracts of condensed yeast, which is similar to human cells in terms of size and structure, have also been developed. The yeast used in such products is cultivated in conditions similar to those that can expose the skin to stress. The silk extract contained in yeast-based cosmetics softens the skin, while the yeast extract called “yeastgen” stimulates its metabolism and protects it.
The bio cosmetics rush has led one local firm to start developing components for companies specializing in bio cosmetics. It develops and exports protein substances that prevent skin aging using GNA-based bacterial transformation. All the 16 kinds of protein substances developed by this firm have been approved by the U.S. Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association for their superior quality. This year, the firm is poised to reap 2 billion won in export sales by exporting more than 10 kinds of products to the United States and Europe.
Cosmetics that possess healing properties, such as the prevention of skin aging, are in the spotlight these days and are likely to remain there in the future as well in line with the growing need of the bio venture industry to rapidly commercialize its technologies.
