The burial place of doomed lovers Cleopatra and Mark Anthony has remained a mystery for more than 2,000 years.

비운의 연인 '클레오파트라'와 '마르쿠스 안토니우스'의 묘지는 2000여 년이 지난 지금까지 미스터리로 남아있다.

Now archeologists say they're close to making one　　 of the greatest discoveries since Howard Carter unearthed Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922.

현재 고고학자들은 1922년 하워드 카터의 투탕카멘묘 발굴 이후 가장 위대한 성과 중 하나를 이뤄내기 직전이라고 말한다.

A team led by Egypt's top archeologist, Zahi Hawass, has found a series of chambers buried deep under the Tabusiris Magna temple, close to the coastal city of Alexandria.

자히 하와스 이집트 발굴단 팀장은 지중해 연안 도시 알렉산드리아 인근 타포시리스 마그나 신전 아래서 여러 개의 비밀통로를 발견했다.

Excavation outside the temple has unearthed a handful of tantalizing clues: Nearly two dozen bronze coins inscribed with Cleopatra's name; an alabaster mask with a cleft chin - could this be the face of Antony?

신전 외곽에서 실마리가 될 수 있는 유물 몇 가지가 출토됐다. 클레오파트라의 이름이 새겨져 있는 동전 20여개와 안토니우스의 얼굴로 추정되는 턱이 갈라진 설화석고 가면이 발견됐다.
Dr Hawass thinks so - but what's really got the expedition excited is the discovery last week of a cemetery near the temple containing gilded mummies that would typically be found next to royalty.

하와스 박사도 안토니우스의 얼굴 모습이라고 생각한다. 하지만 발굴단이 정말 관심을 갖는 것은 지난 주 신전 인근 한 묘지에서 발견된 금박을 입힌 미라다. 이 같은 미라는 보통 왕족 옆에서 발견되기 마련이다.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) HEAD OF EGYPT'S SUPREME COUNCIL OF ANTIQUITIES, DR. ZAHI HAWASS, SAYING:

"I believe that those people who are buried beside this temple, they could be buried beside an important person - a King or a Queen. Because no one　　 would be buried beside a temple without reason, as we saw in Pharaonic period, they'll always be buried beside the pyramids."

이집트 고유물 최고위원회 위원장인 자히 하와스 박사는 "이 신전에 매장돼 있는 사람들은 중요한 인물 즉, 왕이나 왕비 옆에 있다고 생각합니다. 아무나 신전에 묻히지는 않기 때문이죠. 파라오 왕조시기에도 피라미드 안에 항상 그들이 묻혔습니다"라고 말했다.

The Roman historian Plutarch said Octavian allowed the two to be buried together but their fabled tomb has never been found.

로마 역사가 플루타르크는 옥타비아누스가 클레오파트라와 안토니우스를 함께 매장하도록 허용했다고 기록했지만, 이 전설적인 무덤은 아직까지 발견되지 않고 있다.

Archaeologists plan to start digging under the limestone temple later this year in a quest to laying one　　 of the greatest mysteries to rest.

고고학자들은 비운의 두 연인이 편히 쉴 수 있도록 올 하반기 석회선 신전 지하를 팔 계획이다.
